Belconnen, ACT, Jan. 9 -- ACT Policing issued the following media release:
ACTPolicing has charged more than 140 drivers with drink or drug driving following a targeted impaired driving operation last month.
December (2025) saw officers from all areas of ACT Policing focus on impaired driving with almost 23,000 tests conductedduring the 31 days of the month.
64people were caught drink driving and80were caught driving with drugs in their system.For the year (2025)609people were charged with drug driving and 614 were charged with drink driving.
A further 1005 infringements were issued for other traffic offences during December.
Officer in Charge of Road Policing, Detective Inspector Mark Steel said it was frustrating thatafter 40 years of drink driving rules, people in the ACT continue to put other road users, their passengers and themselves at risk by getting behind the wheel with alcohol or drugs in their system.
"The belief that youwon'tbe caught, that it is OK becauseit'sonly a short trip or thatI'monly just over the limit are allridiculousexcuses. The evidence is clear -impaired drivingremainsone of the key factorsin collisions resulting in death andseriousinjury,"said Detective Inspector Steel.
"I can assure all drivers on ACT roads that in 2026, we will continue to be relentless in our efforts to ensure that our roads are as safe as possible - and those doing the wrong thing will be caught and appropriate sanctions applied."
