CANBERRA, ACT, Aug. 4 -- Murray-Darling Basin Authority issued the following news release:
Kosha Shanahan has been appointed as the REO for the region, expanding our regional engagement in the southern Basin.
Kosha has been a valued member of our engagement team since early 2024. In June of this year, she stepped up to answer the Sunraysia's call to fill in the gap in engagement in the region.
Having lived and worked in the vibrant regional city of Mildura for the past 15 years, Kosha has built well-established networks with the communities across the Sunraysia and beyond.
During this time, she has raised a young family, and worked in both government and private sector community engagement, in various roles across education, employment, and First Nations health and community services.
Despite her years of experience within this patch of the Basin, Kosha attributes her deep understanding of community dynamics and regional economies to her time living and working in remote Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
"Before relocating to the Basin, I had always been surrounded by desert and empty rivers in remote areas of Australia, where water policy was not front of mind," Kosha said.
"So it was quite the contrast moving to the Sunraysia region, where the river is quite literally the lifeblood of the community and the wider Murray-Darling Basin.
The Sunraysia region is located within the southern Basin's Lower Murray catchment, stretching across northwestern Victoria and southwestern New South Wales. Mildura is the biggest town in the area, and is situated in the far west of the Murray region, on the banks of the southern side of the River Murray.
This small but mighty region is a major contributor to the Basin's food bowl, and is renowned for its vast vineyards, irrigated crops, and dryland farming. Kosha will be spending the next few months connecting far and wide with the communities, groups and industries that form this region.
Kosha's presence within the region will also extend to the Lower Darling catchment - home of the Menindee Lakes system and Kinchega National Park - which provide important habitat for waterbirds and aquatic life.
Here Kosha will be working alongside MDBA Engagement Officer and long-time local Richard Unsworth, who is focusing on community engagement for the Menindee Review.
