BRISBANE, Queensland, Jan. 28 -- Queensland Police Service issued the following media release:

The community can expect to see a high visibility police presence on the roads this week to support a safe return to school.

Police are reminding motorists that reduced speed limits in school zones are back in play.

The return to school also marks the closure of Operation Mistletoe this week which is a road safety operation that focuses on reducing the lives lost on Queensland roads over the school holidays, including the back-to-school period.

Moreton District Officer Chief Superintendent Adam Guild said speed limits are put in place and strongly enforced for everyone's safety.

"There will be many more people on the roads from this week, especially during drop off and pick up times," Chief Superintendent Guild said.

"Be aware of reduced speed limits around schools during the peak times. That's generally 7-9am and 2-4pm, but times can vary so always read the sign.

"School zones can be unpredictable with cars coming and going and children and parents walking or riding to school, so it's vital you pay extra attention when in the area.

"Now is also a great time to ensure your child knows safe ways and places to safely cross the road.

"Please keep an eye out for pedestrians, slow down, pay attention and drive with caution and patience."

This warning is especially pertinent as Queensland experiences it's deadliest start to the year, regarding lives lost on our roads, since 2020.

Tragically, in just under one month, 23 lives have been lost on Queensland roads with one of those lives lost in the Moreton district.

Chief Superintendent Guild said it's a deeply concerning trajectory that cannot continue.

"Each life lost leaves a lasting impact on so many in the community.

"Every decision you make on the road has the power to save a life or take one, so please make good choices.

"Please consider other road users including pedestrians, and be especially vigilant around school zones."

Despite the closure of Operation Mistletoe this week, police will continue high visibility traffic enforcement across the district targeting the education and enforcement of the proven causes of traffic crashes including speed, impaired driving, fatigue, seat belt use, driver distraction and vehicle safety standards.

Moreton district wishes students beginning or returning to school a happy and safe start to the year.
