CANBERRA, ACT, Oct. 2 -- Australian Federal Police issued the following media release:

The Tasmanian Joint Organised Crime Task Force (TAS JOCTF) has charged a third man as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged seizure of about 17kg of methamphetamine at Burnie last month.

Police allege the New Norfolk man, 33, is a member of an Outlaw Motorcycle Gang and is the third person accused of allegedly being involved in the importation of a large quantity of methamphetamine into Tasmania. The illicit drugs were seized during a targeted search of a vehicle by TAS JOCTF authorities on Friday, 18 September.

The New Norfolk man was arrested at Glenorchy on Wednesday (30 September, 2026). He was charged with trafficking a controlled substance and dealing in the proceeds of crime, which carries a maximum penalty of 21 years' imprisonment.

He was remanded in custody and appeared in the Hobart Magistrates Court yesterday (1 October, 2026), when he was granted bail.

He is scheduled to next appear in court on 2 February, 2027.

This follows the arrest on 18 September, 2026 of two alleged associates - a 40-year-old NSW man and a 41-year-old Hobart man, who are accused of also being involved in the 17kg methamphetamine seizure.

Both men have been charged and remanded in custody and are expected to have their next court appearance in early November.

The Tasmania JOCTF is a multi-agency taskforce comprising Tasmania Police, the AFP and the Australian Border Force working to identify, investigate and dismantle criminal networks seeking to profit from illicit drugs in Tasmania.

Tasmania Police encourages anyone with information relating to drug trafficking or organised crime to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.
