A St Marys man appeared before the NSW Bail Division Court yesterday (4 August, 2026) charged for allegedly importing items bearing Nazi symbols and allegedly making a Nazi salute in a public place.

An AFP investigation began in February, 2026, following a report from Australian Border Force (ABF) about the interception of a package, described as kitchen utensils, containing knuckle dusters branded with Nazi symbols.

The matter was referred to the AFP's National Security Investigations (NSI) team for further investigation.

Inquiries into the consignee details led NSI investigations to execute a search warrant in St Marys on Tuesday, 4 August, 2026.

Items seized included prohibited goods and right-wing extremist paraphernalia. Investigators also found a photo of the man allegedly making a Nazi salute at a museum.

The man, 41, was later charged with:

* One count of intentionally importing a Tier 2 prohibited weapon being a Nazi insignia knuckle duster, contrary to section 233BAB(5) of the Customs Act 1901 (Cth). This offence carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment;* One count of intentionally importing a prohibited Tier 1 good, being a medieval sheath bearing Nazi insignia, without approval contrary to section 233BAA(4) of the Customs Act 1901 (Cth). This offence carries a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment; and* One count of making a gesture in a public place that is a Nazi salute, contrary to section 80.2H of the Criminal Code (Cth). This offence carries a maximum penalty of 12 months imprisonment.

The man was granted conditional bail and is scheduled to next appear in Penrith Local Court on 3 September, 2026.

AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett announced the establishment of NSI teams in October, 2025, to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia's social cohesion, including the targeting of Australia's social cohesion.
